
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate Worker’s Day, the President-General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has extolled Nigerian workers for their unwavering resilience and dedication to duty despite the numerous challenges facing the nation’s industrial sectors.
In a press statement to commemorate the day, released by Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna , Head of Media on 1st May, 2025, Comrade Abi urged Nigerian workers to continue to keep the flag flying, emphasizing the importance of diligence and professionalism in their various callings.
According to him, “There’s nothing as being diligent in giving dignity to labour, that’s the works of your hands, which will eventually speak for you as a Nigerian wherever you may find yourself, and for sure, you will not be left unrewarded, for a diligent workman will definitely be paid his wages, entitlements, and handsomely rewarded.”
The MWUN PG also admonished workers to stand tall in their various professions and live up to their professionalism by demanding their legitimate rights. He expressed optimism that no matter how difficult it may seem, the government will definitely see the positive sides to listen to the workers’ plights and comply with every demand made.
Comrade Abi specifically congratulated the union’s workers, comprising the four branches of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA), Dockworkers, Seafarers, and the Shipping branch, for their unwavering commitment towards moving the maritime industry to enviable and achievable heights in the comity of the global world.
In a special commendation, the Delta State-born Business Administrator, Maritime Expert, and Seasoned Sailor showered praises on the critical stakeholders of the industry. He stressed that the only way the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and the stakeholders will continue to enjoy relative peace, harmony, and cordial working relationships is by keeping to the mutual and understanding relationship both have struck over time.
While urging stakeholders not to relent, Comrade Abi assured that the Union is always committed to seeing vibrant port operations through efficient and effective service delivery, as operated across the world. He emphasized that in doing so, the workers must not be neglected in their welfare and remunerations.
The MWUN PG praised stakeholders for their contributions to the industry’s growth, emphasizing the need for mutual understanding and cooperation to maintain relative peace and harmony. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the harsh economy and high inflation but expressed optimism that the government would soon rise to the occasion to improve workers’ welfare.
Comrade Abi wished all Nigerians and workers a memorable May Day and prayed that their committed efforts towards the progress of the nation’s economy will not go in vain.
