
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is mourning the untimely passing of Comrade Ayo Ohiwereh, a highly respected and diligent leader who left an indelible mark on the union.
This was disclosed in a press release by Head of Media ,Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna on 18th May,2025
Ohiwereh’s funeral, held in London, was attended virtually by MWUN officials and members, who paid their last respects via Zoom.
MWUN President-General, Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, described Ohiwereh as an astute administrator and a stickler for details, whose dedication to the union’s projects and collective bargaining agreements was unparalleled.
Abi noted that Ohiwereh’s leadership and expertise, particularly in handling the Maritime Affiliate Support (MAS) project, were instrumental in strengthening the union’s CBA in Nigeria.
Ohiwereh, a graduate of Nigerian and UK universities, served the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) London with distinction, working closely with MWUN before his passing. He will be remembered for his magnanimity, love for his colleagues, and his ability to bring people together.
The union’s leadership and members are still grappling with the loss of Ohiwereh, who was known for his persistence, courage, and fruitful service. As the maritime community mourns his passing, MWUN extends its condolences to his family, wishing his gentle soul to rest in perfect peace.
