Maritime Workers Union Confirms Oniha as Secretary General

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has officially confirmed Comrade Oniha Erazua as the substantive Secretary General of the Union, following six months in an acting capacity.

According to a press release signed by the union’s Head of Media , Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, The announcement was made during a joint session of the Union’s National Administrative Committee (NAC) and Central Working Committee (CWC) held on Friday, August 13, 2025.

Comrade Oniha, who hails from Edo State, brings with him a wealth of experience, having climbed the ranks from Assistant Secretary General to Deputy Secretary-General, where he oversaw critical portfolios including Training & Research, Education, and Media. His confirmation follows the retirement of his predecessor, Comrade Felix Akingboye.

Oniha holds a Master’s degree from the University of Ibadan and previously served as a teacher before joining the MWUN. His rise through the ranks has been marked by a reputation for dedication, discipline, and progressive thinking.

In the same session, the Union also confirmed the appointments of two other senior officials to the position of General Secretary for their respective branches.

Comrade Olangwe Fred Dagogo, former Organising Secretary, has been promoted as the General Secretary of the Seamen and Water Transport Branch. A Mechanical Engineering graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, Dagogo has served diligently in his previous capacity and is well regarded for his organizational acumen.

Comrade Joseph Ekwere has been confirmed as the General Secretary of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Branch of the Union. Ekwere began his career with the MWUN as a Computer Secretary in the Seamen and Water Transport Branch and steadily rose through the ranks. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Lagos.
