Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the cancellation of his December 25 birthday celebration in honor of the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred in Ibadan on Wednesday.
The incident, which took place at a children’s funfair organized at the Islamic High School in the Basorun area, claimed the lives of 35 minors.
Speaking on Friday while receiving a condolence delegation from the southeast arm of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Makinde expressed his deep sorrow over the loss.
The delegation, led by Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President and Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) sympathized with the people of the state.
“We, the people of the south-east, feel the pain of the sudden death of the 35 children,” Wabara said during the visit. “We pray that God grants you, the people of Oyo State, and especially the parents of the victims, the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.”
The delegation included former Governor of Ebonyi; Sam Egwu, Ben Obi, former PDP National Secretary; Josephine Anenih, a member of the PDP BoT; Obasi Elebe, a party chieftain; and Onyema Nwele, Chairman of the Ebonyi PDP.
Makinde, visibly moved by the condolences, reiterated his commitment to supporting the bereaved families and ensuring that such an incident does not recur in the state.
