Live Up to Expectations of Your New Ranks, Comptroller Oshoba Tells New DCs, ACs

Customs Area Controller of Apapa Command, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba has urged newly promoted Deputy Comptrollers of Customs and Assistant Comptrollers of Customs to brace up for higher responsibilities and live up to the responsibilities of their new ranks.

Speaking at the opening session of a training programme organised for the newly promoted officers, Oshoba said the management of the service and the country is expecting more from the elevated officers as they handle higher tasks.

He reminded them that by their new ranks, some of them shall be assigned to critical aspects of customs operations requiring them to be more alert and imbibe the use of technology for trade facilitation

The CAC also urged them to prepare for more training and retraining as according to him, customs has become more knowledge driven than ever before

He said “As your Area Controller, I am proud of you all for attaining this career milestone by your hard work and distinguished performances in your examinations

“As a team, the participation of every one of you is important to the overall success of this command and in achieving this, you need to broaden your knowledge, sharpen your skills, refresh your memories on the things you already knew and be open to innovations

“Customs has become more knowledge driven than ever before. Even with the Revised Kyoto Convention which aims at simplifying trade, there are cases of non compliance either out of ignorance or deliberate attempt by traders going through customs control to circumvent laid down procedures. This calls for more alertness in our deployment of human tactics and available technology for risk assessment.

“Your elevations came at a time the NCS is making history in terms of modernisation; trade facilitation through advance ruling, time release study,authorised economic operator, one stop shop and other initiatives. You are challenged to be versatile and measure up to expectations by being able to use these tools when and where necessary

“I implore you to make the best use of this period, learn, interact with yourselves on the challenges ahead and simulate likely case studies on what lies ahead of you. In addition to the knowledge you shall be leaving here with, I urge you to build a strong networks.

“By your new ranks, some of you shall be assigned to critical aspects of our operations including being custodians of passwords needed for release of consignments. You are also stepping into leadership roles to either oversee junior officers, perform supervisory responsibilities and be guiding examples to your subordinates . Abide by the tenet of JUSTICE AND HONESTY , which is our motto characteristics” he said
