We’re Adopting International Standard to Improve Ferry Safety in Lagos, Says LASWA MD, Emmanuel

The Managing Director of Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA) , Oluwadamilola Emmanuel has said to improve ferry passengers’ safety ,the Authority has to adopt international standard.
While speaking at the Regional Ferry Safety Conference held in Lagos from June 25 to June 26, 2025, he noted that water transport should be expanded beyond it’s operation in Nigeria.
He added that what motivated the Regional Ferry Safety Conference is the need for safer waterways generally because water transportation is now becoming a more dominant mode of transportation in Lagos state.
“The key to enhance our safety measures was to benchmark across Africa but most importantly benchmark even beyond Africa to outside Africa. What has motivated this is the need for a safer waterways generally because it’s now becoming a more dominant mode of transportation in Lagos state. We need to even expand that in Nigeria.”, he said
Mike Corrigan, the Chief Executive Officer, Interferry explained that to implement safety, commitment and leadership are required from the people, maritime regulatory agencies and the government . He added that it will take a period of time to achieve total safety on the Nigerian waters.
” It’s going to take some time, it’s going to take commitment and leadership and it’s going to take commitment from people at the top of organizations to say that we are changing our attitudes values and beliefs. Safety is the most important thing that we do.”
“Safety is a journey. Creating a just safety culture does not happen overnight, it’s not realistic to think that we’re going to walk out of this room and things are going to change overnight.
