The newly-sworn-in Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has promised will restore the confidence of Nigerians in the Judiciary.
She stated this in Abuja while fielding questions from State House correspondents shortly after she took the Oath of Office.
“I expect that we will take the judiciary to higher heights, the reputation that it has. We will improve it. We will make sure that people have more confidence in the judiciary. I believe that it’s not a one-man job. We all have to be on board. I believe that there will be cooperation because we all want to see a better Judiciary”. she stated.
“A better judiciary is for the benefit of the entire nation, whatever the shortcomings that we see today, we’re all members of the society. So if you want to see improvement, let the improvement start with every one of us and our approach to justice. Let us also have faith in the system”, she added.
The Acting CJN said she would also look into the process of appointment of judges both at the Bar and the Bench, and that Nigerians would have a judiciary they could be proud of.
While commending President Tinubu for swearing in the Acting CJN, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, said the President’s action had shown the importance and the strategic relevance of the judiciary to the nation.
He described the Acting CJN as being an outstanding jurist and urged her to ease the process of the dispensation of justice.
President Bola Tinubu on Friday swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd and second female Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, in an acting capacity, pending confirmation by the Senate.
Justice Kekere-Ekun began her legal career in Lagos as a private practitioner from 1985 to 1989, In December 1989, she was appointed as a Senior Magistrate Grade II in the Lagos State Judiciary.
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun is the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria, after Maryam Aloma Mukhtar, who held the position from July 2012 to November 2014.
She takes over from Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on Aug. 22 at the age of 70.
