The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched zero-emission electric transit services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, as part of efforts to promote renewable energy use and reduce carbon emissions within the aviation sector.
The initiative, unveiled on 29th January, 2026 was developed in partnership with Possible Electric Mobility and Zeut Energies and marks a significant step in FAAN’s drive towards sustainable airport infrastructure.

The project introduces electric buses and sedans to provide seamless transportation for passengers and airport staff, a move expected to significantly cut carbon emissions while aligning Nigeria’s aviation operations with global green energy standards.
The electric transit services were commissioned by the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, alongside the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku. Also present at the event were FAAN directors, general managers, heads of departments, development partners, and other key stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ganduje commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support for sustainable development initiatives, as well as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, the FAAN management team, and the project’s development partners for their commitment to the initiative.
In her remarks, Mrs. Kuku said the introduction of electric transit vehicles reflects FAAN’s broader strategy to optimise energy usage and reduce dependence on fossil fuels across its operations. She noted that FAAN has already implemented several energy-efficient measures, including the installation of energy-saving bulbs, deployment of solar lighting in airport terminals, and improved waste recycling systems.

Mrs. Kuku reaffirmed FAAN’s commitment to a full transition to green energy solutions and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu, the Minister of Aviation, the FAAN Board, the NAIA management team, development partners, and stakeholders for their unwavering support.
The event concluded with Dr. Ganduje and Mrs. Kuku inspecting the newly deployed electric buses and sedans, where they examined the vehicles’ advanced features and operational capabilities.
