
The Western Marine Command of Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted cannabis weighing 1,958kgwith a duty payable value of ₦398,265,000 including applicable taxes
Addressing a press conference in Lagos Area Controller for Western Marine Command, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye said the seizure is a product of intelligence and uncompromising enforcement.
According to him, his officers relying on credible information swooped into action and made the seizure at the deep sea around Bar Beach area. No suspect was arrested as according to Bamisaiye, the illicit drug and means of conveyance were moved to the command headquarters
Giving further details on the seizure, Bamisaitye said “Earlier today, officers of the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command successfully intercepted 53 sacks of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa, containing 3,793 loaves and weighing a total of 1,958 kilograms. This seizure took place along the waterways near Bar Beach Outstation through the relentless efforts and commitment of our dedicated officers”
He added that the support of the Comptroller General of Customs,Bashir Adewale Adeniyi has empowered the Command to achieve remarkable successes in ensuring that smugglers have no safe haven on our waterways, thereby creating a secure and thriving environment for legitimate trade.
Bamisaiye said “As a command, we remain resolute in our mission to safeguard our waterways from the infiltration of harmful substances. Drug smuggling not only fuels crime but also destroys lives and communities. I strongly urge members of the public to desist from encouraging the trafficking and consumption of these illicit substances, as they are contributing to the degradation of our youths and the wider society.
“In line with established procedures, the seized items will be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution. We will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure that justice is served and that the perpetrators of such crimes are brought to book.
“Once again, I commend the gallant officers of the Western Marine Command for their vigilance and dedication. Let us continue to work together in the spirit of national service and commitment to a safer Nigeria”
