The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has concluded a week leadership retreat for its newly promoted Comptrollers, aimed at strengthening their capacity in leadership, innovation, and integrity to drive the Service’s modernisation agenda.
The retreat, which took place at the Senator Ahmed Makarfi Auditorium, Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, began on Tuesday, 7 October, and ended on Friday, 11 October, 2025.
Declaring the event open, the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), DCG Sulaiman Chiroma, described the exercise as part of the Comptroller-General of Customs’ ongoing reforms to prepare senior officers for strategic leadership responsibilities in line with global Customs standards.
According to him, the retreat offered an opportunity to realign with the Comptroller-General’s three-point agenda of collaboration, consolidation, and innovation, which serve as the guiding principles for the modernisation of the Service.
DCG Chiroma urged the newly promoted Comptrollers to demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and teamwork in the discharge of their duties, noting that their leadership would define the public image of the Service.
In his closing address, the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Human Resource Development, DCG Greg Itotoh, congratulated the participants on their elevation, describing the promotion as both a reward for hard work and a call to greater responsibility.
He reminded the officers that their new positions placed them at the forefront of Customs management, where integrity, professionalism, and transparency must guide every decision.
DCG Itotoh urged the participants to apply lessons from the retreat to improve operational efficiency, mentor their subordinates, and strengthen stakeholder confidence through transparent service delivery.
Also speaking at the retreat, the National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, delivered a lecture titled “Stakeholder Management, Media Community, and Employee Relationship.”
Maiwada underscored the importance of effective communication and relationship-building in achieving organisational goals. He advised the officers to foster positive engagement with stakeholders and maintain credibility in all interactions.
Maiwada added that transparent communication and proactive stakeholder management are critical to the success of the Comptroller General’s reform agenda.
Some of the participants, including Comptrollers Usman Yahaya, Murtala Mu’azu, and Josephine Egwakide, expressed appreciation to the Comptroller-General and the management team for their continued support.
They pledged to uphold the core values of the Service, protect its image, and contribute to achieving the Comptroller-General’s vision of institutional excellence, improved service delivery, and sustained stakeholder confidence.
