The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has reiterated his commitment to embrace digital innovation to enhance operational efficiency.
He made this known during the ongoing CGC’s annual conference on Wednesday, 13 December 2023, at the Lagos Continental Hotel.
Emphasizing the importance of data analytics to help achieve the Nigeria Cusstoms Service statutory mandate, CGC Adeniyi said, “For progress, efficiency, and strategic planning within Customs administration, data in its form is a foundation for better decision-making, ensuring operational precision, and fostering a commitment to excellence.”
“The role of data isn’t just theoretical; it could sharply shape modern Customs operations as the practical application of data has driven innovation, enhanced transparency, and optimise operational efficiency.” He emphasised.
The CGC outlined vital initiatives to integrate data analytics into customs processes, emphasizing the need for a proactive approach to risk management, fraud detection, and trade facilitation. “The implementation of advanced data analytics tools, machine learning algorithms, and artificial intelligence is expected to streamline customs procedures and enhance decision-making capabilities.”
The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, His Excellency Manassah Jatau, who delivered paperwork on “Leadership, a crucial factor in the performance of Government, “explained that the Nigeria Customs Service over the years has evolved in different styles of leadership that introduced different growth and technological advancements in attaining the service’ goals and objectives.
Jatau, who is also a retired Deputy Comptroller General of Customs encouraged senior officers of the Service to remain resilient and open for innovations as leaders, stating that, “those who cannot change their minds cannot change their heads”.
In a thought-provoking panel discussion, Past Customs Senior Officers reflected on the Nigeria Customs Service past events as well as shared insights on the topic: “Retrospect look at the NCS: Reflection from the past.”
ACG Kofo Olugbesan (Rtd), highlighted the dynamic changes in customs operations during her tenure and emphasized the importance of adapting to evolving global dynamics.
According to her, “there’s no present without the past, as such, the growth of the service is tremendously noticeable as the past has paved way for the present and the future”.
The panelists also expressed optimism for the future of the Nigeria Customs Service, emphasizing the importance of continued reforms, technology integration, and international collaboration to address emerging challenges in the ever-evolving landscape of global trade.
Meanwhile, a cocktail was earlier organised for serving senior officers from the rank of CACs, ACGs, and DCG as a prelude to the CGC’s Conference on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.
The event provided a platform to network and create relationships and stronger bonds between senior officers.
