The new Controller of Customs in charge of Federal Operations Unit Zone D in Bauchi, Comptroller Shuaibu Kaila, has promised a tougher period for smugglers and other perpetrators of unlawful activities within his area of responsibility.
Kaila, who said this during a brief handover ceremony at the unit’s headquarters, said smugglers are enemies of the country who do not mean well for the generality of Nigerians.
According to him, aside evading duty payment, which compromises the nation’s revenue, he blamed smugglers for trading in regulated items like medication, unwholesome drugs, expired food and other products without the necessary statutory approvals from designated government agencies.
He solicited the support of the officers and men of the command and urged them to jointly and individually justify the confidence reposed in them by the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
Comptroller Kaila also advised members of the trading community to shun all forms of illegality while urging them to feel free to visit the command for enlightenment on government import and export guidelines as ignorance of the law will not be accepted as an excuse during enforcement
He also enjoined members of the public to provide information anytime they discover suspicious movements of smugglers.
Comptroller Kaila also commended his predecessor, Comptroller AL Umar, who he wished well as he proceeded on retirement. He said the invaluable contributions of Umar in the command is highly appreciated.
He described the command as very organised under Umar and promised to build on the achievements he met on the ground
Comptroller Umar thanked the officers of the command for their support to him and urged them to give more support to the new Controller FOU Zone D
