Businessman Bags 12 Months Imprisonment for Buying Minerals without License

Justice Muhammed Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin on Tuesday, sentenced a businessman, Kingsley Ogala, to 12 months imprisonment without option of fine for purchasing minerals without lawful authority.

Ogala and one Isah Musa were prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 3-count charge of possession of 30 tonnes of mineral without lawful authority.

Similarly, the Makurdi Zonal Command of the EFCC secured the conviction and sentencing of one Akende Gbande Mark before Justice N.I Afolabi of the Federal High Court, sitting in Lafia, Nasarawa State on one count charge of fraud.

Mark, sometime between July and September, 2020 in Makurdi, Benue State with intent to defraud did transfer airtime in the aggregate sum of N211,300 from Access Bank Account No. 3024934975 belonging to one Danjuma Bello to his Airtel line No. 08166413766 using an unauthorized access device and thereby committed an offence.

The defendant pleaded ‘guilty’ to the charge. Upon his plea, the prosecution counsel, M. Yusuf prayed the Court to convict and sentence him as charged.

Justice Afolabi convicted and sentenced Gbande to pay a fine of N150,000, with a warning to desist from any criminal act forthwith. Failure to pay will cause him to serve a prison term of four months.
