Ag. Controller Afeni Receives Ogun Student Leadership, Pledges Collaboration with Community Stakeholders

The Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC), Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Olukayode Afeni, has played host to the national leadership of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) at the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun 1 Command.

The courtesy visit which was held on 22nd January, 2025 provided an opportunity to strengthen ties with the student body and reinforce collaboration with local communities.

Deputy Comptroller Afeni reflected on the historical significance of the Idiroko border and noted that relations between the Customs Service and local communities have greatly improved. He observed that previous clashes between officers and host communities have ceased, ushering in a new era of peace and cooperation.

However, the CAC expressed concern over the high volume of drugs seized daily, noting that the trade is largely perpetrated by youths. He warned that the illegal market persists due to a “buyer-seller” cycle, which he pledged to dismantle through strengthened enforcement and community collaboration.

During the meeting, NAOSS Global President, Comrade Olubodun Olalekan, commended the command for its strategic achievements, particularly in intercepting illicit and dangerous drugs, including marijuana, and illegal arms and ammunition. He emphasized that Ogun 1 Command plays a critical role in national security, ensuring that illegal businesses do not thrive within the state.

As a gesture of support, Comrade Olalekan pledged that NAOSS would organize a sensitization rally aimed at educating youths on the dangers of smuggling and drug consumption, highlighting the role of young people in breaking the cycle of illegal trade.

The courtesy visit underscores a growing partnership between NAOSS, Ogun 1 Command, and community stakeholders, aimed at promoting youth awareness, public safety, and stronger local engagement in the fight against smuggling and illegal activities.
