
Deputy Comptroller Usman Adamu, the Acting Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has commenced the year with a strategic stakeholder engagement aimed at strengthening trade facilitation and advancing trade modernisation in Kano State.
According to a press release issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs ,Tahir Balarabe,the engagement, held on 4th January 2025, brought together members of the Kano business community under the auspices of the Association of Kano Business Community (AKANOBCO) at Tribes by Meena Restaurant, Kano.
At the one day sensitisation programme, participants were educated on key trade facilitation initiatives of the Service, including the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) Programme, the National Single Window (NSW), and Customs Licensed Agents procedures. The command urged stakeholders to leverage these initiatives to enhance their import and export operations, noting Kano’s strategic position as the commercial nerve centre of Northern Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, commended the business community for their sustained cooperation and compliance with Customs procedures. He assured stakeholders of the Command’s commitment to continuous engagement and sensitisation, building on the legacies of his predecessor.

Adamu further disclosed that the command would seek the approval of the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Bashi Adewale Adeniyi for the translation of key Customs guidelines, including import and export prohibition lists, into the Hausa language to improve understanding and compliance among traders.
The immediate past Area Controller, Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar (rtd), was honoured by various business associations for his outstanding performance and contributions during his tenure. In his remarks, Abubakar encouraged the business community to embrace the Service’s trade facilitation tools in line with global best practices and modern business operations.

Also speaking, the President of the Association of Kano Business Community, Alhaji Sabiu Bako, lauded the Nigeria Customs Service, particularly under the leadership of the CGC, for deploying innovative technologies to ease trade processes. He reaffirmed the business community’s readiness to comply with Customs regulations and pledged continued collaboration with the Kano/Jigawa Area Command. He also wished Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar (rtd) success in his future endeavours.

The event attracted notable stakeholders, including the National President of the Kano State Traders Union (KASTU), Dr Dan Bature Abdulaziz; Alhaji Ibrahim Jarman Gaya; board members of the Kano Business Community; the Chairman of the Kano Market Chairmen Forum Association, among others.
