Strategic Management Essential for Sustainable Development, Says Umar, Katsina Customs Controller


The Comptroller , Kastina Area Command, Nigeria Customs Service, Mohammed Umar has said the Nigeria Customs Service recognizes that strategic management is not merely a theoretical concept but a practical and indispensable tool for achieving sustainable success.

While delivering a paper to professionals, scholars, Heads of Agencies and leaders at a seminar tagged ” Strategic Management:The key to Sustainable and Successful Performance” in Kastina, he stated that Strategic Management empowers NCS to navigate the complexities of its environment, meet the expectations of stakeholders, and contribute to national development.

According to him, the Nigeria Customs Service operates in an ever-evolving landscape of international trade, and it’s strategic planning must be agile and responsive to these changes.

He however pointed that the Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, in his quest to achieving Sustainable and Successful performance has come up with an unrelenting commitment to unlock NCS’s full potential; hinged on his policy thrust of Collaboration, Consultation and Innovation.

” In a constantly changing world, the ability to adapt to new challenges and leverage emerging opportunities is critical.Strategic management requires us to allocate resources efficiently. In our case, this means deploying our personnel and technology effectively to fulfill our mission. We must make informed decisions on where to allocate our resources to ensure optimal results”.

“The policy thrust of “Consolidation, Collaboration, and Innovative Solutions” is not merely a collection of words; it represents the very essence of our mission in the Nigeria Customs Service. It signifies our unwavering commitment to build upon the foundation of excellence laid by our predecessors, forging stronger partnerships with key stakeholders, and continuously seeking innovative solutions to the challenges we face. This policy thrust holds profound significance for several reasons”.

” In the first 100 days in office of this administration, we embarked on a comprehensive overhaul of the Nigeria Customs Service, guided by our policy thrust. We recognized that to effect real change, we needed to incrementally challenge the status quo and instigate a transformation that was both dynamic and results oriented”.

Umar added that it is important to engage all stakeholders in the strategic management process.

He explained that Strategic management involves continuous planning, monitoring and evaluation.

” In a democratic society like Nigeria, transparency, accountability, and the involvement of various stakeholders, including the business community, are essential for the successful implementation of our strategies. For the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), our mission is to facilitate legitimate trade, protect our borders, and generate robust revenue for the government. Our vision is to be an excellent customs administration”.

“We must assess our progress, identify areas where we can improve, and adapt our strategies accordingly. Regular reviews of our performance against set targets are integral to achieving sustainable success. It is essential to look ahead with a clear vision for the future. This is Strategic management! This is our key to sustainable and successful performance”.

Umar expressed his gratitude to the government, stakeholders and traditional rulers in the state for their unwavering support.
