Our Streamlined Cargo Clearance at Lekki Port Contributes to Trade Facilitation , Says Kukoyi, Ag. Customs Controller

As Lekki Deep Sea Port ranks among the most automated ports in Nigeria, with systems deliberately designed to close gaps identified in older facilities, the Nigeria Customs Service has reiterated it’s resolve to facilitate trade and maximize the benefits of modernisation while synchronizing the Port’s system with the customs Unified Customs Management System, also known as B’Odogwu.
According to Deputy Comptroller Olufemi Kukoyi, Acting Controller of Customs at the Lagos Free Zone Command, the port reflects a collaborative, technology-driven approach between the NCS and port authorities aimed at smoother cargo movement.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an award and art exhibition ceremony held at Lekki,Acting Controller Kukoyi said “Cargo clearance process is streamlined, and the cost of doing business is reduced As it is, we are working well here.”
He noted that while processes are functioning effectively, further improvements are planned. “We believe that there’s room for improvement. Other measures will be put in place to see if we can scale up our processes and procedures here.”
Addressing questions about rapid clearance targets similar to those pursued at Ports Terminal Multiservices Limited(PTML) , Kukoyi said short turnaround times are achievable. “Yes, it’s possible. Once your cargo is compliant and your documents are complete, they are correct, you don’t have any problem there.” He clarified that the formal clearance process itself is not the bottleneck; physical exit of cargo from the port is what typically takes longer.
On revenue performance as the year draws to a close, Kukoyi confirmed the command is working toward its target and shall continually promote seamless cargo clearance with efficient human resources that compliment the technology driven ports infrastructure.
He added that port users on his watch have been enjoying faster clearance of cargoes with prospects for improvement.
