…Afeni vows Idiroko will remain hostile to smugglers
The Ogun I Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted smuggled goods with a Duty Paid Value of N2,469,153,523.68, including a 2026 Range Rover Sport Autobiography P530 valued at N417,011,982.
Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller Oladapo Afeni, disclosed this on Thursday at a press briefing at the command headquarters in Idiroko, Ogun State. He said the seizures were recorded between August and September 2026 through intelligence-led operations, physical examinations and closer work with other security agencies.
Afeni listed the intercepted items as 1,204 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 3,893 parcels of cannabis indica weighing 1.878 tonnes, 428 pneumatic tyres, 8,675 litres of Premium Motor Spirit in kegs, 24 bales of second-hand clothing, four sacks of used shoes and 500 litres of diesel. He also cited interceptions of premium used vehicles, narcotics, used clothing and illegal wildlife and solid minerals.
He described the Range Rover as one of the highlights of the briefing and said the overall seizures showed the command’s “uncompromising zero-tolerance policy for border economic sabotage.”
As part of inter-agency cooperation, the command on Thursday handed over the 3,893 parcels of cannabis to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Idiroko Special Command, for further investigation.
Afeni said the command had continued to collect duty, assess baggage and examine goods at designated border points despite pressure along the land corridor with the Republic of Benin. He added that import and export checks had been tightened on sensitive consignments, including mica stone, compressed natural gas, white talc and crushed thermal coal, while legitimate trade was being facilitated.
He said border security remained a shared duty and that the command had held joint meetings with the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Immigration Service, NDLEA and environmental agencies. Dialogue with traditional rulers, youth leaders and border community groups had also been sustained to reduce tension during operations.
Beyond enforcement, Afeni pointed to community and welfare activities, including inter-command athletic competitions in August and September 2026, in which Ogun I emerged volleyball champion.
He credited officers of the command and the support of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and the NCS management. He thanked host communities, traditional rulers and the media, and warned that Ogun I would remain “a hostile zone for uncustomed goods and illicit trade.”
