The Ogoni Welfare Association (OWA) and the Gbaaloodum Ogoni Women Association (GOWA), Lagos Chapter, have commended the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, for what they described as his inclusive and deliberate approach to governance.
The commendation follows the appointment of Mr. Lekue Kenneth as Commissioner for Finance, Budget, and Economic Planning a move the groups say reflects growing recognition of Ogoni professionals in the state’s leadership structure.
In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the Executive Chairman of OWA, Engr. Nwinmene Migah, and the Chairlady of GOWA, Mrs. Bridget Horace-Awi, described the appointment as a significant step toward balanced representation and equity in governance.
They noted that the Fubara administration has made visible progress in infrastructure and social development, which has helped strengthen public confidence and trust across various communities in Rivers State.
While applauding the governor’s efforts, the associations called for increased attention to development challenges in Ogoniland, pointing to ongoing gaps in critical infrastructure.
They urged the state government to prioritise the provision of motorable roads, potable water, and electricity in underserved communities.
“Several communities in Ogoniland still lack access to electricity,” the statement said, adding that there is also an urgent need to rehabilitate dilapidated primary and secondary schools across the area.
The groups further expressed concern over the economic hardships facing grassroots populations, particularly women, and called for targeted interventions to support vulnerable groups, especially widows, amid rising inflation and declining purchasing power.
Reaffirming their support, OWA and GOWA expressed confidence in Governor Fubara’s leadership and urged his administration to sustain its commitment to inclusive and equitable development across all regions of the state.
