
The Apapa Command of Nigeria Customs Service has commenced a three day training programme for newly promoted Deputy Comptrollers and Assistant Comptrollers of Customs.
Addressing participants at the opening session of the three day event, Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu urged participants to brace up to the responsibilities of their new ranks
Olomu said, though the training is supposed to take longer periods of time considering the volume of course content, but the command would utilise the three days well by compressing all relevant contents for the officers efficiency
According to the Controller, newly promoted Deputy Comptrollers session would focus on t their functions as terminal heads to strengthen their leadership and oversight capacity
He added that for Assistant Comptrollers, focus would be on their functions as releasing officers to ensure achieve the performance of their duties with due diligence, facilitate lawful trade, prevent revenue leakages and the import or export of prohibited items
Olomu said the training is a demonstration of Nigeria Customs Service Management commitment to continuous capacity building for enhanced productivity
The Controller likened the session to the eagle’s renaissance where eagles drop their old feathers, old beaks and come out better skilled to soar higher, have more vantage views of their operational environments and hunt with excellent precision
“You have to forget the past, where you could hide under senior officers . Now, you would be more accountable for whatever action you are identified with ” the Controller said.
Speaking earlier, one of the trainees and moderator of the opening ceremony, Assistant Comptroller Abubakar Usman described the training as a necessity for optimum performance in a command like Apapa.
