Ejibunu, Operation Whirlwind Coordinator Wins CGC Award of Excellence for Fighting Fuel Smuggling


Comptroller Hussein Kehinde Ejibunu, Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind has received the Comptroller General of Customs Award of Excellence for the many anti smuggling exploits achieved especially in the preventing smuggling of petroleum products

Comptroller Ejibunu’s team has been consistent in making arrests, confiscating petroleum products in jerrycand, drums and tanker trucks from smugglers while they attempt taking the products across the nation’s borders

At the awards ceremony where Ejibunu was honoured in Abuja on Friday, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi commended the recipient and his team members for their relentless efforts in supporting the federal government initiative to stamp out smuggling of petroleum products which has become an issue of great economic concern.

Ejibunu’s operational impacts have been widely felt across the country where Operation Whirlwind officers have suppressed smuggling of PMS and ensured safe handling of seized products due to their volatility.

Due to Operation Whirlwind impacts,the Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority(NMDPRA) Engr Farouk Ahmed has disclosed that recent collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service has caused a reduction of 10million litres from the volume of Nigeria’s consumption of premium motor spirit.

Speaking at the 2024 Comptroller General of Customs Conference in Abuja, Engr Ahmed said the special operation by NCS codenamed ‘Operation Whirlwind’ has achieved a consistent reduction in the monthly consumption figure

Specifically mentioning northern borders, the NMDPRA chief executive said while a total of 59.7m liters were consumed in May 2024 before the commencement of Operation Whirlwind which has achieved reduction to an average of 47m liters from June to October 2024.

Farouk who was represented by Mr. Ukoha Ogbugo said the authority observed unjusitfiable movement of trucks towards the borders which points to possibility of smuggling and lauded the Nigeria Customs for stopping the trend of product diversion
