In a remarkable feat, the Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a staggering 143% increase in revenue collection for the first half of 2024, totaling N1.023 trillion.
This surpasses the N421 billion generated in the same period last year.
This was disclosed in a press briefing by the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu.
Comptroller Olomu attributed the command’s success to its robust intelligence gathering, enhanced Customs-community relations, and non-intrusive inspection regime.
“Our strategic approach has not only boosted revenue collection but also facilitated legitimate trade and protected the national economy,” Olemu stated.
In the area of anti- smuggling operations, he said within the period under review, the command made seizures of eleven (11) containers comprising of prohibited items such as expired and unregistered pharmaceuticals, footwears, used clothing, armored cables, frozen poultry products etc., with a Duty Paid Value of N424,105,975.00) as against 42 seizures with a DPV of N1.4 billion made in the corresponding period in 2023.
“Notably, the command made significant seizures of prohibited items, including expired pharmaceuticals and frozen poultry products, with a Duty Paid Value of N424 million.
“These efforts demonstrate the command’s unwavering commitment to combating smuggling and protecting the country’s economic interests.
Olomu praised the collaborative efforts of sister government agencies and stakeholders, including the Nigeria Police, DSS, NDLEA, NAFDAC, SON, NIS, NAQS, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Navy. He also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the entire Management team for their leadership and support.
As the Apapa Command continues to drive revenue collection and trade facilitation, its achievements underscore its dedication to its mandate and contribution to Nigeria’s economic growth.
