16 Years Blackout: Ndokwa Leaders, Residents Seek Sterling Global Intervention on Power Supply

The traditional ruler of Utagba-Ogbe, Ndokwa West LGA, Delta State, Isaac Obi I and others have called on Sterling Global Oil Resources Ltd, (SGORL) an indigenous oil exploration company to support in the supply of electricity to the area that has been in blackout for over sixteen years.

Isaac Obi I said the Utagba-Ogbe community hosts the company, yet the community hasn’t benefited power supply from it . He said if the the request is granted, it will bring development to the area.

He appealed to Sterling Global to liase with leaders in the community to create a solution to the problem.

“Sterling Global provides electricity to Asaba and the town in which the facilities are in Ndokwa don’t have electricity.How does that look like? My appeal is that they should come close to some of us the community leaders in order to assist us.”, he said.

During a visit to the traditional ruler by members of the United Ndokwa for Growth and Development Association (UNFGADA) , the Public Relations Officer of the Group, Moses Onyegwu who represented the Chairman, Kunili Olushola Friday said lack of electricity has hindered growth and development in the area.

The group urged the federal and state governments, as well as other oil companies in the area, like Ajick, Midwestern Oil and Gas, Sterling Oil, Serco, to bring electricity to the area.

“Ndokwa Nation is one of the largest ethnic groups, not just in Delta City but in the nation at large. It’s a nation that has been really blessed by God with abundance of natural resources, but yet when you look at the community, it’s a shadow of what it ought to be. We have the source of the IPP step-down in Obosi coming from up here, and yet we don’t have light in Ndokwa Nation.”, Onyegwu said.

Residents of Ndokwa complained that the lack of electricity in the communities is affecting their businesses.They requested that solution is proferred to the problem as soon as possible.

While expressing his feelings about the situation, a fashion designer said , “We are suffering and our businesses are not thriving.I will be glad if the government or companies around us will provide us with electricity.”

A trader also said “It’s over seven years since we’ve been in darkness .If we can be provided with electricity, even at this very moment, I will be very happy.”
