Several people have been killed in a communal clash in Libbo ward of Shellenge Local Government Area of Adamawa.
The Councillor representing the ward, Shauibu Waleed, confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), saying that the clash began when the alleged body of a man from Gomba community of neighbouring Demsa Local Government Area was found lifeless, with the Gomba people claiming that he was killed by a Fulani.
‘The corpse of two Fulani men were later seen in what looked like a reprisal attack, this escalated the attacks.’
Waheed said, “I can’t actually say the number of people killed but I knew that we buried five dead bodies and I saw one other dead body burnt beyond recognition inside a mosque while about 200 houses were burnt.”
According to him, peace has been restored and already soldiers and policemen have been stationed in the area.
Mr Haruna Furo, the Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), said that the crisis affected a total of six communities.
“I don’t have details of the incident; all I know is that about six communities were affected.”
He said that relief materials have been dispatched to the affected community by the agency.
Adamawa Police Command Spokesman, SP Othman Abubakar, said that a unit of Mobile Policemen (MOPOL) have been drafted to the area.
Abubakar said, “I am yet to get details of casualty but normalcy has been restored to the area. A unit of MOPOL had been sent to the area to maintain peace.”
